May 2007 Newsletter

We've got some great activities coming up between now and June 2nd that should really be a lot of fun for everyone.

First....

Sunday, May 26th, is the Annual Lower Lake Day Parade and BBQ. The parade starts at 11 a.m. on Main street, and the BBQ is from noon to 3 p.m. The Lower Lake Watershed Council is manning a booth in the Community Park, so be sure and drop by and say "hello" to all the dedicated volunteers from the Lower Lake area. Their booth is conveniently located near the BBQ.... The Stream Table will be there, and also aquatic insects to look at under microscopes. That should bring back memories for the members of the Upper Cache Creek Stream Team, and make them want to jump back into the creeks. It should also be a great exhibit for the kids to visit.

And speaking of kids....

Tuesday, September 29th, is the annual Kids in the Creek event! In my humble opinion, this is one of the most fun things we do all year, so if you're not doing anything between 8:30 and noon, stop by the U.S.Forest Service Middle Creek Campgrounds (our outdoor classroom), and see what it's all about. We'll put you to work, but I guarantee you'll have a great time. The event is sponsored by the East Lake and West Lake Resource Conservation Districts, with assistance from volunteers from the watershed groups. About 200 fourth graders are invited from neighboring schools, they're divided into small groups, and then the fun begins. They rotate through various stations positioned along Middle Creek to learn about the Clear Lake Hitch, invasive weeds, wildlife biology, aquatic biology, soils, hydrology, water quality, Native American culture, and how they use the native plants for the famous Pomo baskets. There just might be a surprise or two, too.

If you're interested in volunteering, give Greg Dills a call (263-4180 x12), and he'll fill you in on the details. You can also email me to volunteer or to request a map to the campground.

Speaking of volunteers....

Saturday, June 2nd in Upper Lake is Wild West Days!! The Middle Creek CRMP is setting up a booth to represent all the watershed groups at this well-attended event. The Stream Table will be making another appearance, which should be a lot of fun for both children and adults. We could sure use another pair of hands for a couple of the shifts, so please let me know if you're interested in having some fun. Another volunteer from the watershed groups is needed for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and two more volunteers are needed from 1 to 4 p.m.

This is a great event -- if you have time to volunteer, please email or call me at 263-7950. Remember this booth is for ALL the watershed groups!
